First Year Rowers

Joining Mt. Lebanon Rowing

MTL Rowing is sponsored and supported by the parent organization, otherwise known as the MTL Crew Club. The entire budget for the team is dependent on fundraising and dues. Prospective team members and their parents must realize that volunteerism is the cornerstone of MTL Rowing’s success and should expect to jump in and get involved quickly. Every team member and every family must help with fundraising and volunteer activities.

All academically and physically eligible students at Mount Lebanon High School are welcome to try out for the team. An informational meeting for prospective team members and their parents is held during the spring and then again shortly after school begins in the fall. By mid-August, those who want to join the team should submit the registration forms as directed.

Those who wish to join the team must:

  • Provide proof of a recent physical exam.
  • Provide all other forms as required by the booster organization
  • Pass a swim test
  • Comply with academic requirements consistent with those of MLHS and crew team eligibility rules.
  • Adhere to MTL Rowing’s membership requirements
  • Adhere to MTL Rowing’s Code of Conduct
  • Attend all scheduled practices and participate fully in those practices. Only those absences approved by the coaches will be excused. Absence from practice will affect boat status.

What is the first year like?

As a novice, rowers will spend the Fall season learning the fundamentals of the sport – terminology, how to carry and care for the equipment, and of course, how to row.

Winter training begins in January. During the Winter season (which is really an extension of the Spring season),

Rowing is a Club sport at Mount Lebanon High School.  A Club Sport is different from a club and this is an important distinction.  Because we are a Club sport, the team members provide the financial support for the team and its activities (racing, purchasing equipment, travel).

A “club” is a socially oriented activity whose purpose is to give students a chance to do something fun with their friends (i.e. ski club).  Mt Lebanon Rowing is an athletic program that competes directly against Varsity and other Club crews at every regatta.  Therefore, it is expected that all team members understand this AND approach participation on this team accordingly.  If competing at a varsity-level is not something you wish to do, you should reconsider rowing.
